A Life Story

Anne Stewart Smith, age 88, of Savannah, went to her Heavenly home on Friday, July 17, 2026, at Hospice Savannah. Anne was born on April 21, 1938, in Baldwin County, Georgia, to the late Richard A. Stewart Jr. and the late Evie P. Stewart. Anne grew up in Gray, Georgia, and graduated from Jones County High School. After graduating from high school, she moved to Savannah, where she met the love of her life, Charles A. Smith. They shared 68 years of marriage. Anne was employed by Belk for more than 30 years. She worked at both mall locations and at the Crossroads store. After retiring from Belk, she began working at J.C. Penney. Anne was a devoted member of Immanuel Baptist Church, where she faithfully taught Sunday School for many years. She and Charles also sang in the church choir together for 40 years. In addition to her parents, Anne was preceded in death by her younger sister, Carlo Hilliard. Anne's memory will be cherished by her loving husband, Charles; her children, Lisa Veale, Wendy Reitz, and Charles B. Smith; her grandsons, Lucas Veale (Eileen) and Jordan Veale, and her granddaughters, Alyssa Veale and Hannah Smith. The family will receive friends at Baker McCullough Funeral Home, Hodgson Memorial Chapel on Wednesday, July 22, 2026 from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. The funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Immanuel Baptist Church, 7375 Hodgson Memorial Drive, Savannah, GA 31406.
