A Life Story

Arnold Joseph Seyden Jr, 84, died peacefully at home on February 9, 2025. Arnie was born on October 15, 1940 in Savannah, GA.Arnie lives on in the memory of the love of his life, Sue Foster Seyden; his three sons, Arnold J Seyden III (Jennifer), Timothy R Seyden (Pam), Patrick Matthew Seyden; and three stepchildren, Mark Daniel Lofton, Michael Dennis Lofton (Ellen) and Marcy Lofton Firoenzo (Scott). Arnie was the ?rst child born to Arnold J. Seyden, Sr. and Marianna Powers Seyden, and is survived by his sister, Marianna Seyden Grevemberg (Kip); his brother, Terance John Seyden (Susan); and a brother and sister-in-law, Vince and Diane Currie. He was preceded in death by his brother, Charles Francis Seyden. Arnie is survived by 13 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and many cousins and honorary family members.Arnie was a communicant of St. Michael's Catholic Church on Tybee Island, where he was a Eucharistic Minister and an Usher for many decades. He was on the church's parish council and was also a choir member. Earlier in his life, he was a communicant of the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Savannah, where he served in his youth as an Altar boy. Arnie also attended Cathedral Day School and St. Michael's Grade School after his family moved to his beloved Tybee Island in 1947. He graduated from Benedictine Military School in 1958, serving as the school bugler for four years as a Cadet.Arnie served in the United States Coast Guard for 10 years combined between active duty stationed in Groton, Connecticut, and reserve service afterward. Arnie had a career with the US Army Corps of Engineers that spanned three decades as a civil engineer technician for the soils section and forged many lifelong relationships from his time there.Arnie was a pillar of the Tybee community during his life. He was a past chairman of the Tybee planning commission and a past president of the Tybee Island Jaycees, where he was responsible for implementing Jaycee Park. Jaycee Park enabled the island to start a Little League baseball program and adult softball leagues. Arnie coached baseball, football, and women's softball for many years on Tybee.Arnie was a member of many civic organizations in the area, including The Hibernian Society, the Irish Heritage Society, The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, the St. Patrick's Parade Committee, and the German Heritage Society. He was an avid gardener and achieved the status of Master Gardener, completing a continued education program. He was also a fantastic pianist and entertained anyone who would listen with his playing and singing skills.Above all, Arnie was a great son to his parents, father and stepfather to his children, brother to his siblings, doting grand and great-grandfather, and friend to everyone he met. He was a devout Catholic, and his faith sustained him in his later years as his health faded.A visitation will be held at St. Michael's Catholic Church on Tybee at 5 PM on Thursday February 13, 2025 followed by a Rosary service at 6;30 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 am on Friday, February 14, 2025 Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist. Burial will follow in Bonaventure Cemetery.Pallbearers will be Ron Bossick, Kirk Jones, Kip Grevemberg, Scott Bacon, Dylan Seyden, Trevor Fiorenzo, Todd Chase, Robert Creech. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Hibernian Society. The family would like to express their gratitude for the support and kindness of their many friends and family during Arnie's illness. They would also like to thank Georgia Hospice for the compassionate care given to Arnie.
