A Life Story

Charlotte Youmans Sowell, age 99, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday, September 17, 2024 at Memorial Hospital in Savannah, Georgia.Mrs. Sowell was born in Swainsboro, Georgia on January 6, 1925. She was the daughter of the late Peyton Lee Youmans, former Sheriff of Emanuel County, and the late Effie Wilkes Youmans. After college, she moved to Savannah in 1945 to work for the FBI. While working for the FBI she met and married John Edward Sowell on February 24, 1952. She lived in Savannah the remainder of her 99 years. After the FBI, she spent the remainder of her career as a legal secretary and retired when she was 76 years old. She was a devout member of Southside Baptist Church from its beginning in the 1950s.In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Edward Sowell.Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, John Gary & Beth Sowell of Alpharetta, GA, and Lee & Robin Sowell of Pelzer. SC; daughter and son-in-law, Diane & John Silas of Metter, GA; three grandchildren, Heather Silas, Johnny Silas, and Christopher Silas; and eight great grandchildren. All of her family will miss her dearly.A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 20, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Baker McCullough Funeral Home, Hodgson Memorial Chapel (7415 Hodgson Memorial Drive Savannah, GA 31406).Interment will follow at 3:00 p.m. in Youmans Cemetery in Nunez, Georgia.Visitation will be held Thursday evening, September 19, 2024 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.The family would like to express their thanks to her caregivers (Sandy McGlohon and staff) for the last four year of extraordinary care and companionship for their mom.In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Southside Baptist Church (5502 Skidaway Road Savannah, GA 31406).
