    A Life Story

    George G. Walker Jr., 75, passed away on Monday, October 21, 2024, surrounded by his family.George was born in Savannah, Georgia, to George and Irene Walker. Soon after graduating from Groves High School in 1966, he enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served his country until 1970, including a tour in Vietnam working on aircraft carriers. After his honorable discharge from the Navy and time served as a Navy Reservist, he joined the Savannah Police Department in 1972.In 1981, he married the love of his life, Belinda Kaye Crouch, of Savannah, Georgia. The couple had two children. George retired from the SPD after 33 dedicated years. While with the police department, he became the senior firearms instructor and sniper team leader for the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team, as well as their lead training instructor. He chaired the committee and was instrumental in transitioning the assigned service weapon from the revolver to the semi-automatic pistol for the city. He also served as the trainer and leader of the Mobile Field Force for the G-8 Summit in 2004. These are just a few of his outstanding accomplishments as a City of Savannah police officer.After retirement, George became an enthusiastic member of Tybee Island Legion Post 154, where he served as Post Commander from 2009 to 2012 and received recognition as Legionnaire of the Year in 2016. He was known as an unwavering Georgia Bulldogs fan and could be found in front of a television every football Saturday.In addition to his wife Belinda, George leaves behind his daughter, Morgan Kearns (Nick), and beloved grandchildren Tennyson Grey and Walker; his son, George Grey Walker III (Corey); his sister, Bebe Whitcomb (Johnny); his brother, John Walker (Marti); and his sister, Katie Tassel, as well as numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, George and Irene Walker, and his brother, Stanley Walker.A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, November 3, 2024, from 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM at the American Legion Post 154 on Tybee Island. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution in George's name to The 200 Club of the Coastal Empire.
