A Life Story

John Winfred Wright, 77, of Savannah, died on Friday, June 19, 2026, at his residence under the care of Hospice Savannah and surrounded by his loving family. John was born on the lower eastern shore of Maryland on April 11, 1949, to the late Hobart Wright and the late Margaret Wilson Wright. In 1970, he married the love of his life Susan. He attended the University of South Carolina and the University of Baltimore. He graduated from the University of Baltimore School of Law where he became a member of the Maryland Bar in 1983, he subsequently joined the federal bar of Maryland and served on the Court of Military Appeals and the U.S. Supreme Court Bar. John served three years with Baltimore Police and twenty-five years with the Annapolis Police, from which he retired as Captain in 1996. He and his wife Susan, moved to Savannah the same year, where he went to work for the American Red Cross and retired as Regional Disaster Services Manager for the State of Georgia in 2015. John was very proud of his heritage and was a decedent of Corporal John Henry Wright of Savannah, who fought with Company B the 8th Georgia Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. He is survived by his wife, Susan Mason Wright; his son, Michael Wright and his wife, Aya Suzuki; and his grandson, Kento Wright. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at Independent Presbyterian Church beginning at 12:00 noon until just prior to the service. The funeral service will follow at 1:00 p.m. at the church. Burial will follow at Laurel Grove Cemetery.
