A Life Story

Margaret Barnett Johnson died peacefully, in her sleep, at her family home on Isle of Hope on October 7, 2024 . Peggy was born in Birmingham, Alabama on May 22, 1929 , the first child of James Leary Barnett and Margaret Mather Barnett. She was a true Southern lady with effortless manners, timeless beauty, and genuine charm. She embraced both an appreciation for the finer things and a down to earth perspective reflecting her young life during the Great Depression. After attending Mary Baldwin College she moved back to Savannah when she was 20 years old, and married the boy next door, David Twiggs Johnson. She was still madly in love with him 72 years later. David and Peggy enjoyed young blissful years at Isle of Hope raising their two daughters….they shared many happy "dock days" sailing, crabbing, fishing, shrimping and swimming in the river.After their girls went to college, Peggy and David moved to downtown, Tybee, The Landings and Bluffton, but their favorite place was their small apartment in Paris where they spent 12 glorious years learning to be 'retired' and 'French'. She always said that their 70's was their best decade!Peggy loved good food, good conversation, reading, learning, making things clean and beautiful, and being Granny to everyone. She was intelligent, commanding and generous. Her artistic nature allowed for many creative projects, including a collaboration with her granddaughter, Kathryn Curran, writing and publishing a cookbook named "A Collection of So Good Recipes" that was published and sold in 1992. This curated compilation of recipes from family and friends remains the holiday cooking go-to for those lucky enough to own a copy! She is preceded in death by her precious husband David, her daughter, Carolyn Trosdal, and her granddaughters, Kathryn Twiggs Curran and Margaret Meriwether Curran. She is survived by her daughter Jan (Michael) Curran; son-in-law, Einar Trosdal; bonus daughter, Anne Bone Porter; sister, Janet B. Dixon; sister-in-law, Benita P. Johnson; four grandchildren, Katherine (David) Rosenblum, Storm (Lynn) Trosdal, Richard (Natalee) Trosdal, and Jordan (Chelsie) Curran; 12 great-grandchildren, loving cousins, and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews. The family is so grateful for the exceptional care extended to her by Hospice Savannah, her kind caregivers, and her special companion Sharon Wingster.A family service will be held at Bonaventure cemetery.
