A Life Story

Nancy Jean Ross Frankland of Savannah, GA, passed away peacefully on September 17, 2024. Born on October 29, 1930 in Pleasantville, NY, Nancy was the youngest child of Jeanette Dwyer Ross and Edward William Ross. Growing up with two older brothers, Ed and John Paul, Nancy was accomplished at a variety of sports and loved the great outdoors. She graduated from Millikin University, where she met her husband-to-be David Miller Frankland. They married in 1952 and began their life together in Evanston, IL. In 1955, they moved to Tarrytown, NY to be closer to Nancy's family and where Dave worked at General Motors. Shortly thereafter he joined the family business, Super Turbine Sales.Their first daughter, Cynthia Anne, was born in 1956, soon to be followed by their second, Susan Jean, in 1957. They resettled in Chappaqua, NY where they lived for 30 years, raising their family and being active in the community, sports, and church. Nancy worked for American Can Company and when the girls entered Horace Greeley High School, she began coaching girls lacrosse, cheerleading, and girls track. She had a successful real estate career at Houlihan Lawrence in Chappaqua and was a dedicated volunteer at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Pleasantville, through which they made a very close circle of friends.Nancy and Dave became passionate about tennis in their 30's and played competitively until well into their 70's. Playing on successful teams took them to many beautiful places and they developed lifelong friendships on and off the court.Nancy was smitten with Dave's love of a cappella barbershop singing and she found a new joy of her own when she joined the Sweet Adelines. When Dave started The Racquet Squad quartet with close barbershop (and tennis) pals, the four couples and their families enjoyed countless adventures together, entertaining people young and old with their lively style of music!In 1996 Nancy and Dave retired to Moss Creek Plantation on Hilton Head Island where they enjoyed 17 fun and active years of tennis, golf, bridge, boating, and attending the Church of the Cross in Bluffton. After Dave passed away in 2012, Nancy continued building a wonderful group of friends, some new, some familiar and honed her bridge skills while joining the landscape committee and volunteering at church.Nancy moved to Skidaway Island in Savannah in 2022 to be closer to family, only a short golf cart ride from Cindy who spent countless hours with her, and she was beloved by the caregivers who called her Fancy Nancy!Nancy will be remembered for her beautiful smile, her silly sense of humor, her boundless energy and optimism, her passion for nature, her love of sports (including being a loyal fan of the NY Giants) and games and puzzles, and her competitive spirit. She is preceded in death by her husband David. She is survived by her family and their spouses: Cindy and Peter Altman, Susan and Larry Clifford; grandchildren Michelle Altman, Dana and Patrick Mohr, Nicholas Altman and Sadie Kitchen, Scott and Chelsea Clifford; great grandchildren Teddy and Cooper Clifford and Caroline Mohr.Donations in memory of her life can be made to Savannah Hospice, who provided the kindest of care to our beloved Nani this side of heaven.
