A Life Story

Diane Kuhr, 91, of Savannah, Georgia, died peacefully Saturday morning at her home in the Oaks at Habersham. She was born in Atlanta, the daughter of Louis and Sarah Piassick, and moved to Savannah in 1954 when she married. Her husband of 47 years, Lee J. Kuhr, Sr., predeceased her in 2001. She earned a journalism degree at the University of Georgia, but her earliest career was as a grade school teacher. She then honed her organizational and executive skills as a homemaker. Anyone who had visited her home in Sylvan Terrace would have to acknowledge that she ran a pretty tight ship. When she returned to the job market, her natural people skills led her into sales positions, first at Georgia Nursery, where her green thumb was also an asset. Then it was rock radio advertising at WSGA and ultimately real estate for Ben Farmer Realty and then Fine Properties. Carrying on a tradition of tzedakah learned from her mother, Diane did volunteer work throughout adulthood. She was a Pink Lady for the Memorial Hospital auxiliary. She worked for the American Cancer Society. She was a member of Congregation Mickve Israel where she served in the Sisterhood. Her last volunteer position was as a Backpack Buddy at Mickve Israel preparing food parcels for food-insecure schoolchildren. Less formally, she was always the one who would show up at a sick or grieving neighbor's home with a big pot of homemade soup. She also had an artistic bent which was expressed through a number of media. As a young mother, she painted water colors of children's stories for her daughter's bedroom. She was in the Garden Club of Savannah and won several ribbons for flower arranging at the Coastal Empire Fair. In later years, she took up photography, an interest she shared with her son. Somewhat of a tomboy as a child, she was always athletic. She was a tennis player as a young woman and later a runner. She ran in a number of road races, including the Peachtree in Atlanta, and finished several marathons. She also served on the committee for the annual Savannah Marathon at Hunter Army Airfield. Surviving are children, Julie Singer of Savannah, Georgia, and Lee J. Kuhr, Jr., of Watkinsville, Georgia; brother and sister-in-law. Joel and Karen Piassick of Birmingham, Alabama; niece Joan Swartz (husband Peter) of Austin, Texas; nephew Louis Piassick (wife Emily) of Macon, Georgia; and longtime friend, Ellen Byck of Savannah, Georgia. The family would like to express our deepest gratitude for the care given to Diane in her final years by the the personal care team of Natasha Ellison's Prime Home Care Solutions, as well as the staff at the Oaks at Habersham. A graveside service will be conducted by Rabbi Robert Haas of Congregation Mickve Israel Tuesday at 3 o'clock in the afternoon at Bonaventure Cemetery.
