A Life Story

Louise Mary Jefferson was born in the historic Elmwood province of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (currently where the Philadelphia airport is located) on January 11, 1944 to the parents of Henry Daniel Jefferson Sr. and Mary (Wright) Jefferson. To the parents' union birth five (5) children with four (4) males that preceded her in death, Richard A. Jefferson (Kathy), Henry D. Jefferson Jr. (Anne), Thomas E. Jefferson, Nathaniel J. Jefferson (Patricia)Louise was educated in Philadelphia where she graduated from John Bartrum High School. She joined St. Paul A.M.E. 86th and Bertram April 1956. She continued her education is shorthand and other clerical fields.On October 17, 1964 she married Elliott J. Dawkins to that union she had Elliott D. Dawkins. Louise worked for Bell South telephone operator, Social Security Administration as a File clerk and a GSA in Camden, New Jersey as a Switchboard Operator before moving to Savannah Georgia. Louise then worked for 22 years with the United States Corp of Engineers as a Contract Specialist where she had to retire early due to health issues September 1994. Louise became a member of St. Phillip Monumental A.M.E. "On park and Jefferson" under Pastor Jaudon. She loved to sing and was in several choirs around the City of Savannah in addition to the church. Some being David Taylor and the Pearly Gates, The Savannah Chorale, and others. She sold Sarah Coventry jewelry and was secretary for many boards and organizations within the city. She would often wear head wraps to link to her African heritage. Louise wrote a book for her family "Celebrate Your Heritage" to leave a trace of history behind. Louise was determined not to allow her disability to slow her she continued to her passion of sewing and writing. She wanted her family to know all the great things that her family did so it would never be forgotten.Louise was known by close family and friends by Sissy. "If I hear someone say Sissy, I know that they know me." She was known for many things, but making sure that she always asked her famously and familiarly known for "Why?" and taking pictures of family and learning and telling me about the history of family and land her in "The Country now known as Georgetown."She leaves to cherish her impact and memory.: Daughter Angela L. Jefferson (1), adopted son Cameron CC Hendrix, Elliott Duane Dawkins (son), Ex-husband and friend Elliott J. Dawkins, Granddaughters Denisha E. Welcome (preceded), Cymphony A.L. Dawkins Thompson (Shemar) Wyoming, Emoni D. Dawkins-Brown (Anthony) Richmond Hill Ga, Ladeysah Dawkins (Macon). Four Grandchildren Amorie Brown, Honest Smith, Kiari Smith, Sabali Thompson, Niece Danielle Jefferson and Nephew Jaysen Jefferson, grandnieces and grandnephews and a host of cousins and friends.The funeral for Mrs. Mary Louise Jefferson-Dawkins will be held at 11:00, Tuesday, December 3rd. at Saint Philip Monumental AME Church. Interment will be in Magnolia Cemetery.
