    A Life Story

Miriam Hunter Morgan, 89, passed away on April 1, 2026, at Effingham Care Center. Miriam was a dedicated and hardworking woman. Throughout the 1960s, she worked as a waitress at the renowned Pirates’ House Restaurant, where she served notable patrons including Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and members of the Hell’s Angels. She devoted many years of service to the youth of Screven County, leading a work program for economically disadvantaged teens through JTPA. She later retired from the Screven County Board of Education, where she served faithfully as both a bus driver and school secretary. Miriam enjoyed history, sewing, and cooking, and she especially loved spending time with and doting on her grandchildren. She was born on April 27, 1936, in Sylvania, Georgia, to the late Mack Henry Hunter and Gladys Bazemore Whitfield. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles C. Morgan; and her sisters, Lillian Youngblood, Virginia Spears, Martha Morel, and Peggy Bazemore. She is survived by her children, Katherine, Kaye, Angie, and Cliff; and her grandchildren, Hannah & Brittany Dasher, and Austin, Zachary, & Sarah Morgan. Graveside services will be held at Newington City Cemetery on Monday, April 6, at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Meals on Wheels (www.seniorcitizensinc.org).
