    A Life Story

    Roland "Mac" Roy McCormick Jr., age, 81, of Savannah, died Monday, January 27, 2025, at Spanish Oaks Retreat after an extended illness. Mac was born on May 11, 1943 in Fredericksburg, Virginia to Roland Roy McCormick Sr. and Irma Clair Hurst McCormick. He joined the United States Navy to serve his country, he served on the USS Robinson, USS Forestal, and the USS San Jose. While in the Navy he received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with a Bronze Star, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th Good Conduct Medals, Meritorious Unit Commendation, and Sea Service Deployment Ribbon. He retired from the Navy in New Orleans before moving to Savannah in 1980. While in Savannah he worked for 20 years with the Chatham County Board of Education and with Hubert C. Baker at the funeral home. Mac was a member of the Isle of Hope Baptist Church, Fleet Reserve Association and the Coastal Amateur Radio Society. He is preceded in death by his parents.His family includes his wife of fifty-seven years, Virginia "Irene" McCormick of Savannah; two children, Roland R. McCormick III and Mary E. McCormick both of Savannah; one brother, Richard E. McCormick and wife Donna of Townsend; one sister, Jacqueline Claire King and husband Trey of Savannah; one grandchild, Kaleb McCormick Webb; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 29, 2025 at Baker McCullough Funeral Home (7415 Hodgson Memorial Drive, Savannah, GA 31406.) from 5:00 until 7:00 pm. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 30, 2025 in the chapel of Baker McCullough Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Glennville Veterans Memorial Cemetery on Tuesday, February 4, 2025 at 3:00 pm.In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial contributions be made to Isle of Hope Baptist Church, Building Fund, 22 Rose Avenue Savannah, Georgia 31406, Coastal Amateur Radio Society, Post Office Box 15552 Savannah, Georgia 31416 or to a Veterans organization of your choice.
