A Life Story

Victor Edward Jarvis Sr., 79, passed away on Wednesday, March 12.Vic was born on August 17, 1945, to the late Richard and Eleanor Jarvis. His parents chose his initials to signify victory in Europe and Japan, as he was born shortly after Japan's surrender at the end of World War II. He lived a peaceful life, cherishing time with his family, faithfully serving his church, and enjoying countless rounds of golf.Vic graduated from Coral Gables High School in 1963 and the University of Florida in 1967, playing on the golf teams for both schools. After earning his degree, he became a CPA and pursued a career in accounting. He later joined BellSouth Corporation, where he enjoyed a long and successful career primarily based in Atlanta, with time also spent in Florida and New Jersey. He served for several years as Treasurer of the Institute of Internal Auditors and was a published author in an accounting magazine. At the time of his retirement in 1998, he was the Chief Financial Officer of BellSouth's long-distance division.In 1972, Vic married the love of his life, Joy. Together, they built a beautiful life, raising their two sons, Vic and Brent, and serving their church and community. The couple enjoyed playing Bridge weekly, competing in tournaments across Savannah and beyond, and volunteering to lead and teach others to play in both Atlanta and Savannah.A lifelong golfer, Vic won multiple senior club championships at both Berkeley Hills Country Club in Atlanta and The Wilmington Island Club in Savannah (now Savannah Country Club). He also won the Savannah Senior City Amateur Tournament three out of four times he competed. Over the years, he made thirteen holes-in-one and once achieved a rare double eagle, also known as an albatross. When not on the course, he loved watching golf and sharing his knowledge of the game with his sons and grandsons.Vic was preceded in death by his parents, Richard Stanhope Jarvis and Eleanor Mae Derbyshire Jarvis, and his brother, Richard Allan Jarvis.He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Joy Lathem Jarvis; his sons, Victor Edward Jarvis II (Amy) and Michael Brent Jarvis (Kerry); and his grandchildren, Carson, Jamie, Caleb, and Cheyenne Jarvis, all of Savannah.Above all, Vic's greatest love was God. He was devoted to his faith and found joy in sharing his love for Jesus with those around him. For more than 20 years, Vic and Joy were active members of First Baptist Church of the Islands, where Vic served as a deacon and led a ministry welcoming newcomers to the Church. He was a devoted husband, father, and friend, known for his kindness, integrity, and unwavering faith.Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 21, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of the Islands. Remembrances may be made to the First Baptist Church of the Islands building Fund or the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
